Along with the growing interest in period houses has come increasing fascination with period outbuildings, especially barns. Some people are so charmed by the rugged timbers and joinery of antique barns that they have them moved and restored so that they can live where cows and horses formerly resided.

Not surprisingly, a whole new group of specialty businesses and craftspeople has sprung up to serve the burgeoning demand for barn experts. Included in these links are three types of companies: (1) timber-frame design-build companies that can construct new post-and-beam barns in the traditional manner; (2) firms that dismantle antique barns, then move, re-erect and restore them; and (3) material suppliers, both of antique barn beams and boards, and new large beams and boards for construction of new barns.
