Robert Ivy, FAIA, and Clem Labine to Deliver Keynotes at Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference

Robert Ivy

Robert Ivy, FAIA, vice president, editorial director and editor in chief of Architectural Record, and Clem Labine, founder of Traditional Building and Period Homes, will deliver keynote addresses at the upcoming Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference in Baltimore. The conference is scheduled for October 21-24 at the Baltimore Convention Center.

Ivy will speak about the value of preservation in our current economy. In a March 2009 editorial for Architectural Record he stated: "In a down economy, it makes good sense to make the most of what you have…Preservation is environmentally correct and the most sustainable thing you can do."

Labine will address the importance of changing the words we use to promote preservation in light of current crises. The keynote will also include the presentation of the first annual Clem Labine Award for "fostering humane values in the built environment."

The theme of the October show is "Smart Solutions for a Challenging Market." The Traditional Building Exhibition and Conference offers attendees an opportunity to learn about tax credits and other challenges in the restoration and rehabilitation of old buildings, to get tips for creating sympathetic additions to existing traditional buildings, and to learn from master craftsmen while earning continuing education credits. It also features a selection of new products used in the traditional building industry.

Attendance at this unique event is essential for architects, building owners, restoration/rehabilitation specialists, custom builders, interior designers, general contractors, homeowners, developers and facilities managers.

The Exhibit Hall will feature hard-to-find products and specialty items used in commercial and residential historic preservation and traditionally inspired new construction. Company experts will be available for consultation. Traditional Building Live will feature demonstrations of traditional building crafts and new products. Selected educational programs will be offered free of charge in the Traditional Building Live Theater on the show floor to any ticket holder.

The conference will feature 65 educational tours, seminars and workshops with a strong emphasis on exemplary preservation and traditional building projects from the Chesapeake Bay area. From the Basilica of the Assumption to the ubiquitous row house, Baltimore has maintained a rich and varied legacy of historic buildings.

Years ago, an effort to sell buildings at $1 each paid off – today, the city is full of vibrant neighborhoods, young professionals, tasty eateries and significant cultural and educational institutions. Packages are available to attend the educational sessions from one to four days. This is an exciting opportunity for networking in the field of traditional building, in an historic city with extensive opportunities to learn and have fun. It should not be missed.
