Prevent Roof Avalances with Proper Snow Guards

They come in pad and pipe styles and adhesive and screw-on models.

Snow guards are one of those architectural elements that can be both functional and decorative. On the functional side, snow guards hold snow and ice packs safely on the roof, preventing avalanches that can damage lower roofs, porches, shrubbery, or -- worst of all -- people passing by or entering the house. On the decorative side, some types of snow guards use ornamental castings to hold back the snow, providing extra visual interest to the roof. There have been some custom home projects where the client paid over $100,000 just to have custom bronze snow guards cast so the roof would have additional richness and texture.

Snow guards come in a wide variety of types -- each tailored to a specific roofing material, roof pitch and housing style. In the list of suppliers noted here, you'll find snow guards for every roof type -- from tile and slate, to standing-seam metal. There are also several major contractors listed. All are experienced installers of sno- retention systems on large homes and historic buildings.
